Understanding Breast Prosthesis, Mastectomy Bras, and Ontario Funding Support
Breast surgery can bring many physical and emotional changes. Whether you've had a lumpectomy, single mastectomy, double mastectomy, or reconstruction, finding products that help you feel comfortable, balanced, and confident is an important part of recovery.
Many women are surprised to learn that there are funding programs and insurance benefits available to help offset some of the costs. Here's what you need to know about breast prostheses, mastectomy bras, and financial assistance in Ontario.
What Is a Breast Prosthesis?
A breast prosthesis is a breast form designed to replace all or part of the breast following surgery. Modern prostheses are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials to suit different needs and lifestyles.
Options include:
-
• Full breast prostheses for women who have had a mastectomy or double mastectomy
-
• Partial breast prostheses or shapers for women who have had a lumpectomy or partial breast surgery
-
• Swim prostheses designed for use in the water
-
• Custom options for unique fitting needs
A properly fitted breast prosthesis is about much more than symmetry or appearance. As a medical device, it helps restore balance and weight distribution following breast surgery, which can support proper spinal alignment, improve posture, and reduce strain on the neck, shoulders, and back. While it can also help create a balanced silhouette under clothing, its primary purpose is to support comfort, function, and overall well-being.
What Is a Mastectomy Bra?
A mastectomy bra is specially designed to hold a breast prosthesis securely and comfortably. Most feature soft pockets sewn into the cups that keep the prosthesis in place throughout the day.
Features may include:
-
• Soft, comfortable fabrics
-
• Higher necklines and underarm coverage
-
• Wide, supportive straps
-
• Pocketed cups for breast forms
-
• Wire-free and underwire styles
Today's mastectomy bras are available in a range of styles, including swimwear. We believe your options shouldn't be limited, which is why we offer a service for many of our regular bras to have a pocket sewn in. This allows us to create a pocketed bra that can securely hold a breast prosthesis while giving you access to a much broader range of styles and fits.
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
Ontario residents may qualify for financial assistance through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP), which helps cover part of the cost of eligible external silicone breast prostheses. To qualify, you must be an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario health card and require a breast prosthesis due to a mastectomy, lumpectomy, failed reconstruction following breast surgery, or certain congenital breast conditions.
How Much Funding Is Available?
Current ADP grants provide:
-
• $195 per side for a full breast prosthesis
-
• $105 per side for a partial breast prosthesis (shaper)
Individuals receiving Ontario Works (OW), Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), or Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD) may qualify for enhanced funding.
What Does ADP Cover?
The ADP grant applies to eligible external silicone breast prostheses.
It does not cover:
-
• Mastectomy bras
-
• Post-surgical bras
-
• Swimwear
-
• Swim prostheses
-
• Silicone nipples
-
• Breast implants or reconstruction surgery costs
How Often Can Funding Be Accessed?
In most cases, funding is available every two years for replacement prostheses when the existing prosthesis is worn out and no longer under warranty. Earlier replacement may be approved if there has been a significant change in body size, shape, or medical condition.
How Do You Apply?
The process is simpler than many people expect.
When you visit us for your breast prosthesis fitting, we will guide you through the ADP application process. Our Fitting Specialists will complete the required paperwork with you and submit the application on your behalf.
Once the application has been processed, funding is paid directly to you by the Ontario government. Most clients receive their payment within approximately 4–8 weeks, using the same method they normally receive Ontario government benefits or reimbursements.
If you have questions about eligibility or the application process, we are happy to help.
What About Insurance Coverage?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for breast prostheses, mastectomy bras, and other post-surgical products. However, coverage varies significantly depending on your insurance provider, employer plan, and individual policy.
Your benefits may cover:
- • Breast prostheses
- • Mastectomy bras
- • Post-surgical bras and garments
- • Specialty swimwear and swim prostheses
Because every plan is different, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage, reimbursement limits, and submission requirements.
While we can provide detailed receipts and documentation for your purchases, clients are responsible for submitting insurance claims directly to their provider. In many cases, insurance benefits can help offset costs that are not covered by the Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP).
The Importance of a Professional Fitting
Every woman's body and surgical experience is unique. A professional fitting can help ensure your prosthesis and bra provide the comfort, support, and appearance you're looking for.
Whether you're newly post-surgery, replacing an older prosthesis, or exploring options for the first time, having access to expert guidance can make the process much easier.
